Class descriptions (in alphabetical order):
Adventures Music Explorations (Wojnicki K-3):
Building on the skills from last session, we will explore more complicated rhythms, sing new folk song repertoire, study the life and works of Beethoven, and apply our new found understanding of the orchestral instrument families to learning and listening to Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. Students who participated in the fall session are encouraged to continue building on last session's foundation, and new students are welcome!
Amazing Race around the 50 States (Rieth 4-6):
In the style of the CBS show The Amazing Race we will have a race around the US. There will be puzzles and games in groups 2 (if possible). So the more the merrier. The idea is to race across America in 8 weeks so there will be lots to cover so depending on how quickly the class works, we may or may not have this in two sessions. I would like to see it in one, but I don't want to rush the students either.
Amazing Race Cooking (Roberts 4-6):
This class will follow the Amazing Race class as they travel around the USA. We will prepare regional recipes and learn more about the culture of different states through their cooking and cuisine.
American Girl: Addy (D’Amico 3-5):
During this session we will read and discuss book one of the Addy series: Meet Addy. We will explore Addy's time period and complete crafts and activities to further our understanding of the Civil War. Girls can read the other books in the series for further study but it will not be required. Girls may read Meet Addy before the class begins or during the session as assigned.
Art (Nallia K-1):
Bible Fun and Games – (Robinson 2-3 ((1st if you are a reader)):
During this session of Bible Fun and Games there will be some similar things and some new things so if you are a returning student or a first time student this class will be for you.
This will be a fun fast paced class using centers with different games. We will continue with our Bible Drills. There will be 7 verses to learn as we talk about the importance of God's word. We will review the books of the Bible as well as how to use our Bibles. Each child will need a Bible and there will be some kind of fun homework sheet or assignment sent home.
JA BizTown (Horn/Halverson/Barnes 3-8):
Upon completion of the JA BizTown Program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of the free enterprise system
- Build money management skills through the practical knowledge of economic concepts and banking practices
- Develop an understanding of basic business practices and responsibilities
- Discuss the roles they, as citizens, play in their community as producers and consumers
- Discuss the imporantance of citizen rights and responsiblities in a community
At the end of BizTown's Spring Co-op, the "Citizens" will visit an actual JA BizTown on May 3rd for a hands-on implementation of their new-found skills.
The Civil War (D’Amico 3-5):
During this session we will study and learn about the Civil War. We will read and complete hands-on activities to further our understanding of the Civil War. There will be a book assigned for reading and/or research to be completed as homework.
Classic Picture Book Authors (Wallaker/Gibson (K-1):
Come join us as we delve into the imaginary worlds of Beatrix Potter, Dr. Seuss, Robert McCloskey, and many more! In this class we will be studying favorite picture book authors, their lives, and where they drew the inspiration for their books. The class will also include read-alouds of one or two books each week and hands-on activities to go along with what we are learning.
Cooking (Smith K-1):
We will measure, mix, pour, stir & mash our way through some ooey, gooey recipes.
The kids will learn to measure the ingredients & get to take home a sample of
what we make each week. We will make play doh, flubber, & ooblik, just to name
a few. Be sure to send them in play clothes, as they may get a little dirty in
this class.
Crochet (Clark 1-3):
An introduction to crochet, learning the basic techniques and hook sizes. We plan on making at least one finished project, more if able. Children will need a hook (no smaller than size J) and a ball of medium to bulky yarn, any color. Michaels Craft store has many yarn choices and usually have 40% coupons!
Lapbooking: Botany/Plants and Fungi Kingdom (Rieth 2-3):
Continuing from the last session (Animal Kingdom) we will now look at God's other creation Plants. We will learning all of this in a lapbooking style.
Legos (Merritt K-1):
The Legos class will be a fun filled adventure of building. We will use mostly Lego blocks, but other brands of "building" will be used also, including tinker toys, Lincoln Logs, trio blocks, and more. Legos class will incorporate simple math concepts including building items to scale, estimating, rounding, fractions, and measuring.
Magic School Bus (Rowland K-1):
Mosaics (Pennington 7-12):
This class is for 7th-12th grade students who take an interest in art. Each student will create an original glass tile mosaic. $?? Class fee to be determined
Music Explorations (Wojnicki 4-8):
After a fun and fulfilling experience teaching 4th-6th grades last session, we are ready to expand this class to include 7th and 8th graders. The class will cover rhythm, note recognition, composer studies and orchestral instruments in greater depth and complexity due to the age maturity of the class. I strive to make this class appealing to guys as well as gals. We had such a great time "jamming" together on homemade instruments last session, I'd like to develop those skills yet further and emphasize rhythmic creativity (think aluminum trash can lid drums) with this session as I think our students are ready for a rewarding challenge. Fall students are encouraged to return and newcomers may join as well.
Research Matters (Mr. Roberts 9-12)
This class will teach students the research skills necessary for academic success in the modern information environment. Library research, database research, and efficient online search technique will be the focus. Other topics: information literacy, ethical use of information, and citation management. A required textbook (approx $20) will be required. This class will require a computer with Internet access and a public library account (preferably JCFPL). At least one class session will be an extended field trip to a local university library.
Scrabble (Pennington 5-8):
This class for 5th-8th graders will focus on playing Scrabble. Scrabble teaches vocabulary, logic and mental math skills in a way that is FUN!
Sharks Unit Study – (Robinson 2-3, 1st grade if you are a reader):
During this class as we learn about sharks we will be creating a notebook of all our information. Each child will need a three ring binder. There will be an occasional homework sheet. This class will be fun and informative.
Sign Language II (Roberts 1-3):
This class if for anyone who knows a little sign language and would like to learn more. If you have learned the sign language alphabet and know a few signs, then you are welcome to join us as we learn more conversational signs, a Bible verse, and a song.
US Presidents (Merritt 1-3):
It would be a nice parallel with the "race around the states" to learn about people and locations. "Presidents" will cover how presidents are elected and have an overview of the past and present Presidents of the US. Although we will not have time to cover all the presidents in depth, we will have a contest to see if any students are able to memorize all the president's names by the end of the semester. A schedule of optional field trips will be provided for those interested.
Looking forward to seeing you in the US Presidents class!
You Decide! (Barnes 9-12):
Get students really engaged with the Bill of Rights. have them make court decisions based upon it! Designed to acquaint students with the origin of the Bill of Rights and its effects on historical cases, this interactive workbook will help students form their own opinions and perspectives. Moving through each of the first 10 amendments, summaries of court cases illustrate the point; critical thinking questions follow. Vocabulary lessons ensure unfamiliar words are learned, while notes explain the origins for the clauses. Book Fee approx $27
