 This will be a fun class – fun with learning, too!  We will supplement each week with books and songs.  We will focus on the body several weeks and on important information that is vital for kindergarteners to memorize, such as home address and phone numbers.  We will work on a section of the All About Me lapbook each week which will include writing, pasting and cutting.

In this class each child will make a lapbook all about themselves.  Some of the concepts we will cover are their first and last names, address, phone number, parent’s names, siblings, and some of their favorite things.  This will be something you will want to save!!

 

American Girl Lapbook/Unit Study—Valerie Cummins  creekermom@gmail.com

Class Fee:$4.00

We will be using a lapbook from Homeschool Share and learning about the American Girl, Kirsten this semester.  Required: Reading each of the 6 books in the Kirsten Series will be required in order to do the Lapbook/Unit Study.  This is more of a historical lapbook/unit study  and you daughter is NOT required to have an American Girl doll, please don’t hesitate to take this class if that is the case. We are going to compare time periods of whom we  are studying about and our own time period, along with compare and contrast, recipes, time era items, vocabulary,time period fashion. 

There  will be homework that has to do with the lapbook  and how much we get done in class.  The students will be reading at least a chapter per week if not 2 chapters… the chapters are not long.

Apologia Science Zoology 1 Flying Creatures—Dana Britt britt.dana@att.net

Class fee:$5

We will be going through the last half of the textbook.  In class we will be discussing the chapter and working on a lapbook.  They will need to read the required chapter each week at home for homework.  I am asking each one to work on a report all session long at home on an insect.  I will have the insects they can pick from and suggestions on the different ways they can do their report the first day of co-op.  They are required to have the Apologia Zoology 1 textbook; ISBN: 978-1-932012-61-3.  We do have a field trip scheduled Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 1-3 to the Louisville Nature Center (details to come later).

We will be using Exploring Creation with Botany by Jeannie Fulbright. Students must have a copy of the text book. We will be doing the experiments in class, and reading and notebooking will be done at home.

 

Critical Thinking/Logic/ Reasoning, grades 1-3 ~ Lori Davis, kldavis98@ymail. com

*Students will use deductive thinking skills to solve & improve the following skill set: mind benders, riddles, sequences, classifications, analogies, tricky logic puzzles, associative reasoning activities, verbal picture puzzles, visual perceptual skills & auditory memory skills using materials from “The Critical Thinking Company” and “Bright Minds.”  The activities listed above are proven to build the following:  develop vocabulary, spelling, reading & problem solving skills, following multi-step directions, improve comprehension & logical thinking, great preparation for multiple choice and standardized testing, real life problem solving skills, deductive thinking & improves grades and test scores.  *Students will work in pairs, teams & individually as the various activities allow.  This will be a FUN and challenging class!

Each week we are going to be highlighting a Dr. Seuss book and then do an activity to correspond with that book.

We are going to learn all about flying insects.  We will look at a different insect each week, do a craft and make a lapbook.  We will also be watching caterpillars change into butterflies.  We have a field trip scheduled for Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 1-3 to the Louisville Nature Center (details to come later).

Calling all kindergarten children!!! This is a class you won’t want to miss. We will enjoy fun games, songs and friendships all while making our upper and lower case letters! We will be working out of our HWT books, Letters and Numbers for Me, and if your child was not in this class in the fall you would need to pay a book fee of $5.00. We will cover all American Wars, beginning with the Revolutionary War to the War on Terrorism.  We will not cover each one in great detail, but will mainly focus on Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI & WWII, Vietnam, and the War on Terrorism.  I will cover battle winning strategies, weapons of war, military generals, and destruction.  Homework will be assigned weekly.  I would like to schedule a field trip to the Frazier Historical Museum after the class has concluded.  Other than the cost of the field trip, no other fee will be incurred for this class.

We will be doing a lapbook/unit study on Inside Your Body (This does NOT include the Reproduction System)  This also IS a scripture based lapbook/unit study with appropriate scriptures. This is also a Journey Through Learning publication.

“Learn all about the inside of the human body in a fun, hands-on way! Your child will study the nervous system, excretory system, respiratory system, digestive system, and skeletal system. Also covered is the brain, skin, muscles and joints, bones, skull, and heart! 

What path does food follow after it is swallowed?, What does the inside of bones look like?, What is the purpose of joints?, What does the brain do when it gets a message?, How much does the average brain weigh?, How many skin cells do you shed in a day?, How do you know when its time to go?, and much more!”

Class Fee:  $14 (covers cost of book)

Description:  Students will learn about the following concerning our state:  geography, relation to other states, Fort Knox, our state flower, bird, motto, nickname, tree, flag, song, seal, Indians, Pilgrims, Pioneers, Agriculture, Government, Industry, etc.  We will be using The “My State History Fun Book” by Joy Dean.  Each student will need his own copy  (This will be ordered by co-op).  This is a neat book & will be a valuable resource for years to come!  You can view this at www.statehistory.net.  We will finish the session with a fun Derby celebration.  

***At least 3 weeks before co-op begins, moms need to do the following:  call 1-800-225-TRIP, X67 & request “everything that is free about Kentucky.”  You will need one set for each child that is participating in this class.  They will need to bring this with them the first week as we will begin using the materials right away.  Please do this ahead of time, as it takes at least 3 weeks for the materials to arrive.  (I will send out reminders to all signed up for the class.)

Pre-Requisites:  Cutting, Pasting, Following Multi-Step Directions, Reading Simple Sentences. 

Homework:  Minimal, youngers will have less & geared to their age group, olders will have it geared to their age group/level.

We will be reading Sing Down the Moon by Scott O’Dell and From the Mixed-up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg.  Sing Down the Moon tells of young Navaho girl who is kidnapped by Spanish slavers.   From the Mixed-up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is about a runaway girl and her brother who find themselves living in the Metropolitan Museum of Art trying to solve a mystery about a statue in the museum.  We will also discuss the different genres of literature.  Both books must be purchased before class begins.  No other fee will be applied.

We will read a FUN MSB book each week and take an adventure down science project lane to turn the book into an activity for all of the children to enjoy! If your child misses a class, they just come to the next, enjoy a new concept and take part in the learning fun! We will be reading 8 different MSB books on 8 different topics!

Join us as we learn about our great heritage of hymns, hymn writers, and stories behind the great hymns of our faith. We will study the history of hymns and songs of yesterday along with some new songs and writers being written today. We will end with some great praise and worship on Dinner and Display night!

We will be using the Schoolhouse Rock DVD to introduce and reinforce basic parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, verbs) and have fun learning about “The Preamble”, solar system, and other topics.   A different topic each week will be introduced through games, songs, and worksheets

We will be studying the sun, moon and the planets in our solar system. We will also be learning about astronauts and space travel.  We will be making a planet model or mobile.   Field Trip to Rauch Planetarium Tuesday, April 13, “Our Place in Space” more info to come.

We will be studying the sun, moon and the planets in our solar system.  We will also be learning about astronauts and space travel.  We will be making a planet mobile.

We will be using a companion to U.S. Geography called Eat Your Way Through the USA

We will make a dessert from each of the three states we are studying in US Geography  We will sample all of the desserts, then package and sell them during lunch!! The proceeds will go toward the purchase of ingredients for the following weeks. Any extra will be turned over to co-op.

We will be using Geography Matters, Trail Guide to US Geography by Cindy Wiggers.  We will be studying the geography of the US by using a notebooking/ mapping approach. We will study 3 states per week.

3rd-4th graders, Volcanoes-we will make a volcano lapbook and a paper mache volcano to erupt.  We’ll learn the main parts of a volcano, main types of volcanoes, some locations of where they are, etc…

This is open to upper grades only.  They will work on designing our co-op yearbook.  As well as taking pictures during the co-op day.  Shanna Simpson the photographer who took pictures for us will be teaching this class with Stephanie Odle.
