FALL 2010 SEMESTER
Nursery will be provided for families with school-aged homeschooled children.
Toddler classes will be provided for families with school-aged homeschooled children, and will include a schedule for the day with craft time, activities, stories, play time, etc.
Pre-K classes will be offered each hour for families with school-aged homeschool children. One hour will be the Handwriting without Tears Program. Parents will need to purchase a workbook for this class.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (Alphabetical order)
Advanced Attributes of God (5th-8th)

This class will cover some of the attributes of God. They will also learn how to use Biblical aids such as the Strong’s Concordance, Bible Dictionary, as well as Webster’s Dictionary. They student will discover how to search and discover the attributes of God as they find them in their Bible. Plans for a laminated flip chart are in the works.

Apples (1st-2nd)

We’ll see that there is more to know about apples than “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”. This class will focus on learning all we can from apples. We will learn through reading books and poems, doing crafts and math with apples. We will talk about the seasons of an apple tree and hopefully make some yummy apple treats! Students will be asked to bring an apple or two in for one week of class. Each student will need a folder with pockets and brads.
Art (3rd-4th)

Strictly fun – draw animals, scenery, people and things from imagination. We will cover the basics of shape, color, design, and media.

Attributes of God – Part 1 (2nd-3rd)

This class will review some of the attributes of God. Using the NIV scriptures, and some competitive game-play, the children will learn who God is according to His Word. Some minimal homework required of looking up scriptures with flashcards, provided by teacher.
Required: NIV Bible
BECOMING a Young Man of God (5th-8th)

Fun and interactive sessions – what young men of God think, feel, and do to help build a solid biblical foundation for becoming godly men. Based on Ken Rawson’s book BECOMING a Young Man of God. Minimal weekly home activity, fathers may be asked for input. Book not required to be purchased.
Birds (2nd-3rd)

We will be discussing birds from many places, their habitat, their food, size, and color. We will also see where birds were mentioned in the Bible and what they symbolize there.
Cooking (2nd-4th)

This will be a fun cooking class. We will learn basics in food preparation, enjoy working together, and make some great food. Come join us!

Drama (4th-8th)

We will perform the play A Gift Fit for a King by Heather L. Smith at Dessert and Display night (approximately 10-15 minutes in length). There will be 8 speaking roles, 3 non-speaking roles, and a piano/keyboard player. (Casting for speaking vs. non-speaking roles will be determined based on registration order.) Experience not required, with the exception of the piano/keyboard player.
Out of class meeting: We will meet at a local park Thursday, June 3rd, for about an hour for the purpose of assigning parts and for students to receive their copy of the script (exact time and location to be determined).
Homework: Students will be required to have lines memorized before the first day of class so class time can focus on rehearsals.
Requirements: Students will provide their personal costume. Costumes will consist of general things found at home. No additional purchases will be expected. A list of common household items needed for props (stage decorations) will be discussed at the June meeting. It will be appreciated for families to allow the cast to borrow some of those items for the performance. Additional purchases will not be required.

Experiencing Music – Part 2 (1st-2nd)

This will be a continuation of last semester’s class. The students will continue learning about music through songs, rhythm instruments, and Orff instruments. Previous class attendance preferred. If your child did not attend the previous class, but does have previous music experience, please consult with teacher before registering for this class. She can be reached at 254-5210.
Fancy Nancy (3rd-4th)

Based on the “Fancy Nancy” books. This class is for girls only – and limited to the first 8 girls.
Holidays of the Year (K-1st)

We will go over some of the major holidays that our country celebrates, as well as some we aren’t very familiar with. Students will learn some of the history behind the holidays, and enjoy games and activities associated with it as well.
IEW (3rd-5th)

This class will focus on report writing and creative writing. We will use IEW materials. The students will purchase a 3-ring, 1 in. binder and divider tabs to keep handouts. Purchasing the IEW student materials binder is optional as we will be using only the last two sections. Allow 3 to 4 hours (or more) of at-home preparation time for writing assignments. Students should have some experience with IEW Part A or B.
Instruments and Composers (4th-8th)

This class will focus on instruments and classical composers. We learn about the instruments in a traditional orchestra, biblical instruments, and rhythm instruments.
Inventions (2nd-3rd)

We will study a different inventor each week which will include experiments, exploration, or adding to a lapbook for the final class project. Some homework may be required.
Required: A gallon size zip-lock bag and basic supplies (pencil, crayons or colored pencils, glue stick, scissors)

Karate (1st-8th)

Mr. Reeser from Shaolin Kempo School of Martial Arts, in Shepherdsville, has agreed to come back and lead the Karate class. He can take beginners, or students that have had some training before. There is a minimum of 10 students.
Class Fee: $20 per student for the semester
Legos (2nd-3rd)

Students will get to build with Legos every week based on Bible stories. We will read a Bible story and build with Legos as Biblical characters did.
Letters from Rifka (5th-8th)

Letters from Rifka by Karen Hesse tells the story of a twelve-year-old Jewish girl and her struggles with brutal treatment while trying to flee Russia and have a new life in America. This class will follow a unit study and each student will complete a “passport” book documenting their journey along the way. Outside reading assignments as well as definitions and vocabulary will be assigned weekly. Question and answer sessions will be conducted in class and topics relating to the historical time period as well as mapping skills covering the major countries involved in WWII.
Required: folder, colored pencils, copy of Letters from Rifka
Homework: Outside reading assignments as well as definitions and vocabulary will be assigned weekly.
Money Matters for Kids (2nd-4th)

Through weekly games and activities the children will learn about stewardship, tithing, generosity, spending, saving, and trusting God. The class is based on the book Money Matters for Kids by Larry Burkett with K. Christie Bowler.

More Kentucky (1st-2nd)

This class will continue learning more about Kentucky. Spring 2010 class attendance not required. This class will be limited to the first 5 students.
Photography (4th-8th)

This class will be a learning process for you and me (the teacher). We will explore the best ways to take the best photos from lighting to distance and perspective. We will take lots of photos using all kinds of methods, angles, and subjects. In order to take this class, the following items/requirements must be met:
Requirements: 1) Must have a digital camera,
2) Must be willing to take up to 5 photos per week,
3) Parent must be willing to print the 5 photos off and send for the next class,
4) Be prepared to come to class with 5 photos for our first assignment.
The photos are the child’s homework and feedback. Without the photos, the class will have no value for the child. We will assemble a scrapbook containing roughly 16 pages to show our journey as we learn the basics of photography. I am not charging an extra fee for this class. The extra cost will be in the weekly printing of photos.
Rocks, Minerals, and other Geology (3rd-4th)

This class will be designed with some hands on activities to be able to identify no less than 12 types of rocks, minerals, gems, etc. We will study how they are formed and why. There will be no outside classroom homework. It is recommended that each child purchase a rock kit (tbd) outside of class for in class identification. It is not required but highly recommended for optimal learning. We will be creating a lap book to record our rock journey. Students should be prepared to bring 5 of their favorite rocks to the first class.
