Book Clubs

FERN CREEK GIRLS AGES: 8-10

(others allowed)

Hi everyone! Time for a new year for Girl's Book Club! I know many of you are returning, but I would love to get a confirmation from each of you since plans do change each school year. We have had great turn out at book club, and I am really enjoying the girls. For new families, here is how book club works:

The girls meet once per month. In our case, we meet the first Thursday of each month (except January, when we meet the 2nd Thursday).

We meet at the Fern Creek Library in their meeting space. They have been terrific hosts!

The girls read the assigned book at home with their parents and then get together to go over questions from the book and each girl presented a project of her choice (some draw pictures, some cook a recipe from the book, some come in costume, etc).

All the books we select are age appropriate, clean books. When the girls arrive, I go over some general questions from the books, and the girls answer questions together. Usually I do "Mystery Quotes" that are quotes pulled from the book and the girls guess who said the quote. Then, the girls present their projects. Finally we have "small group" time where we break down into small groups (3-4) and go over "icebreaker" types of questions related to books in general, or the specific book we are reading. (Some of these questions from the past are: Favorite book, authors you have read more than one book, first book you remember having your mom or dad read to you.)

All of this year's books are not selected. Last Year we did: The Long Winter, Heidi, Mystery Book Month,Charlotte's Web, How-To Book of your choice month, A Bear Called Paddington, etc. *September: From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, October is Mystery Book Month, November: Little Town on the Prairie. December is TBA. January is: Bring your won book or story you are writing to share. * Parents are welcome, siblings are welcome. You can browse the library while book club is going on if you like. If you drop off your daughter, just let me know you are going to so that I do not leave until all girls are back with their families. Malia Russell 491-1924, 396-0693

IF YOU LIVE IN SHELBY COUNTY AREA: There is another book club JUST for you! It is hosted by Elizabeth Vazquez at 1:30 on the 3rd Thursdays of the month and the Shelby County Library. Her ages are much broader (4-12). Her phone number is: 502-834-9905

October 18th *The Trumpet and the Swan* by E. B. White. November 15th.*The Story of Dr. Dolittle* by Hugh Lofting. They will not have a meeting in December. Elizabeth Vazquez 834-9905

BOYS BOOK CLUB

Approximately age 10, but use your discretion: Caroline Maddox is organizing the boys book club again this year. The first meeting will be Sept. 13 from 1-3. Book selection for Sept will be "any book of your choice"

For presentation time, I would like for each boy to write a summary that should be at least one school page long and include what they liked or didn't like about the book. Do they recommend the book? Why? Convince us! Snacks will be served and some freetime is included.

Bookclub is geared at approx. a 10 yr. old level (my son's age), and each parent is asked to use their own judgement to determine if this might bea good fit for their son/sons. Parents and sibs are welcome to stay. 254-5317 Caroline Maddox
